Papers regarding disputes over Chippewa bands' hunting, fishing, and related rights, 1968-1974.

Typed and photocopies of legal documents, including lawsuits by the Leech Lake and White Earth bands of Chippewa against Minnesota and its Dept. of Natural Resources, asserting their treaty rights to control hunting, fishing, and wild ricing on reservation lands; court rulings and state appeals (1971-1972); memoranda of agreement by the litigants (1972); and conservation codes drafted by the Indian plaintiffs, with state senate bills approving them (1973-1974). Also included are clippings discussing Indian-white relations around Leech Lake, and other aspects of the controversy.

Edward James Devitt, the son of a railroad round-house foreman, was born May 5, 1911 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Devitt gained notarity as the youngest judge in the USA.
